FIFO Cache: how it works

1. What is FIFO?

   First In, First Out evicts the oldest item: the one that was inserted first, regardless of how recently or frequently it was used.

2. Key Property

   Unlike LRU, a CACHE HIT in FIFO does NOT change the item's position in the eviction queue. Only new insertions move things forward.

3. Belady's Anomaly

   FIFO is the only policy that can suffer Belady's anomaly: adding more cache capacity can sometimes increase the miss rate!
